New Paint!

Wednesday, September 30th, 2009

Ah, what can I say? Got a note from Steve, he says the car is painted and ready to go [ almost ].  We’ll see it in a few hours.  The “list” that we just sent to Steve was a mile long……. there is still a lot to do, much of which has nothing to do with the car……   more to come later.

Bonneville Update

Tuesday, September 29th, 2009

Doesn’t look like it’s gonna happen in October…… [ bummer ] Car is looking good, but there’s no way it will get done in time so, on to Plan D.

Plan D consists of:

1] Finishing the ‘Liner

2] Bringing it to Ontario and placing all decals and lettering

3] Running it on the chassis dyno

4] Modeling it for FloWorks

5] Running it at El Mirage [ if it doesn't rain ]

6] Taking photos of it at a photo studio nearby [ maybe with the Double Dually, although that would be 65' to photograph..... ]

7] Maybe a magazine story with the detailed photos. The theme? How hard it is to build a fast [ and safe ] car to go over 400 MPH…..

8] Plan for 2010

Amir on Land Speed Racing

Sunday, September 20th, 2009

This is an older video from last year, when the SpeedLiner was still in its early stages, but Amir does a great job explaining the who, what, where and why of the SpeedLiner project for those who haven’t been following the saga since its inception:

Speedliner Build Photos

Saturday, September 19th, 2009

Weather reports say its raining in Wendover right now, which means the salt is wet. Not the best conditions for land speed racing, so the SCTA has pushed everything back by one day with actual runs starting on Thursday. With that in mind, we’ve delayed leaving for Utah until tomorrow morning.

In the meantime, we thought we’d post some photos of the SpeedLiner at Performance Fabrication getting skinned just before it went into the paint booth.

Race to the Salt

Friday, September 18th, 2009

Dear Spectre SpeedLiner Supporters,

It’s been a while since we’ve updated the SpeedLiner community, so we thought it was time to send out an update and let you in on the latest developments.

To recap, The Speed By Spectre SpeedLiner, Spectre Performance’s gasoline powered, wheel-driven streamliner, is being readied to hit the salt in pursuit of a record breaking 400+ mph run. Under the guidance of crew chief Steve Schmalz of Performance Fabrication in San Carlos, California, the SpeedLiner was totally redesigned and reengineered to run in the unlimited Blown Gas Streamliner (AA/ BGS) class. If successful, the Speed By Spectre Speedliner would be the world’s fastest wheel-driven, gasoline powered vehicle.

The engine, a 529ci (8.8L) Cadillac with twin intercooled 88mm turbos completed dyno testing a couple weeks ago on the Cad Company dyno in Albuquerque, New Mexico resulting in horsepower numbers just south of 2000. See the video below for a behind-the-scenes sneak peek at the first start on the dyno.

After many months of 24-hour days, Steve and the crew from Performance Fabrication are packing everything up to hit the road and head for the SCTA World Finals this week, October 7th – 10th. The Speedliner will make initial shakedown and tuning runs in the 300mph range with famed land speed racer and member of the 200 mph club Kenny Hoover at the wheel. Having set or broken 36 land speed records over the past four decades, Hoover is uniquely qualified to test the SpeedLiner. Amir Rosenbaum, President and Founder of Spectre Performance plans to also take the wheel for two licensing runs, qualifying him to drive at unlimited speeds and help set official records.

Attached are some of the latest build pictures and the final artist rendition. More pictures of the finished product and the weekend preparation will soon follow. You can also follow the minute by minute progress, trials and tribulations here on the SpeedLiner Blog.

Wish us luck, and stay tuned for more updates.

Sincerely,

The Spectre SpeedLiner Crew

The car [ and the totally new trailer they had to build for it ] are both coming together. At this point I would have to say that odds are good that we’ll be on the salt in 2 weeks [ weather permitting ].
