The Goodguys 6th Spring Nationals presented by Brown’s Classic Autos in Scottsdale, Arizona was Brandy’s first time competing in a Goodguys Autocross event in three years

Brandy Morrow-Phillips grew up around cars joining her father, who works in the automotive aftermarket industry, at SCCA and NASA events. Brandy began competing and attending driving schools after getting her license. In 2008 Brandy was given the chance to compete in several Spectre Performance vehicles as part of a marketing program for the company. Her diligence paid off in 2011 when she won her first Goodguys Autocross event at the 2011 Goodguys Nationals in Columbus, Ohio. However, in 2012 Brandy hung up her driver’s suit in favor of maternity clothes as she and her husband started a family.

The Goodguys 6th Spring Nationals presented by Brown’s Classic Autos in Scottsdale, Arizona was Brandy’s first time competing in a Goodguys Autocross event in three years. Not only that, but Brandy had flown into Scottsdale, Arizona for the Friday morning portion of the event from Jasper, Indiana. Brandy had been on site for the 48-hour Corvette build at the RideTech corporate headquarters as a representative for Spectre Performance. By the end of Friday’s events Brandy had been awake for nearly 24 hours straight.

Come Saturday morning Brandy had gotten some much needed rest and she began to push the PCH Rods built Chevy C10-R faster with each lap of the Goodguys Scottsdale Autocross course. Brandy’s husband Rob Phillips took his experience racing his 1969 Chevy C10 show truck into consideration when building Brandy’s C-10R. His ideas culminated into a Chevy C10 with a heavily modified custom suspension set up. As Brandy’s driving improved over the course of the day Rob’s hard work and innovation was beginning to pay dividends. Brandy’s best lap was 68.9 seconds, with a 1 second penalty added for knocking over a cone, and her final winning time was 69.901 seconds. She was technically 5 seconds faster than her closest competitor in the truck class.

With this win Brandy is able to move into the Goodguys Autocross Pro Class. Brandy’s winning run in the Truck class was nearly 5 seconds slower than the winning Pro Class driver Kyle Tucker. This means she’ll have her work cut out for her to once again gain the top spot on the podium. However, Brandy certainly took consolation in the fact that her winning lap was faster than two-time Indianapolis 500 winner Al Unser Jr’s best lap in the Pro Class. While winning and moving on to the Pro Class was part of Brandy’s to-do-list this season, she has also taken it upon herself to help promote the sport of Autocross. Brandy spent the entire weekend giving spectators, and fellow racers, rides in the PCH Rods C10-R. In fact the list was so long that she didn’t have enough track time to take out everyone who signed up. Brandy has also made it a goal to get kids involved in racing. Between runs, kids can sit in the PCH Rods C10-R driver’s seat, take pictures with the truck, and get a hero card personally autographed by Brandy herself.

Shiny Spectre Performance Air Intake Adds a Bunch More Power to Toyota FJ Cruiser

Shiny Spectre Performance 2010-2015 Toyota FJ Cruiser air intake system 9002

Shiny Spectre Performance 2010-2015 Toyota FJ Cruiser air intake system 9002

The Toyota FJ Cruiser is a rugged retro styled SUV inspired by classic Toyota FJ40 Land Cruiser models sold from 1960-1984. During development of the modern FJ Cruiser Toyota sourced many parts from existing models including suspension components used in the Prado, Hilux, Tacoma, and 4Runner. Also borrowed from the Tacoma, Tundra and 4Runner is the 4.0-liter 1GR-FE DOHC V6 engine giving 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014, and 2015 Toyota FJ Cruiser models 260 horsepower and 271 lb-ft of torque from the factory. Unfortunately slumping sales of the Toyota FJ Cruiser led to the model’s discontinuation in the North American market, however it will still be sold in regions such as Australia and the Middle East.

While 260 horsepower and 271 lb-ft of torque might seem like enough on paper the power losses incurred through the drivetrain means that around 20% of that power will not make it to the wheels. A performance air intake system, such as SPE-9002, from Spectre Performance will help to regain some of the horsepower and torque lost along the way. By replacing the factory air filter box with an oversized open element High Performance Racing (HPR) air filter, and eliminating the accordion like hosing of the stock system with a shiny polished aluminum air intake tube, a Spectre Performance 2010-2014 Toyota FJ Cruiser 4.0L air intake system is able to free up a considerable amount of horsepower and torque.

The Spectre Performance air intake for 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014, and 2015 Toyota FJ Cruiser models with the 4.0L V6 engine has been dyno proven to increase horsepower and torque on an otherwise stock 2014 Toyota FJ Cruiser 4.0L. On the dyno, Spectre Performance air intake 9002 showed an unbelievable estimated gain of 23 more horsepower at 4,779 RPM and an unheard of 39.12 lb-ft of torque increase at a commonly used 3,254 RPM. Extra horsepower and torque will boost power for off-roading, towing or common every day driving.

Spectre Performance HPR air filters are built with a pre-dyed synthetic filter media that will not fade, top quality urethane, and steel mesh. Spectre High Performance racing air filters are pre-oiled and ready to use. A Spectre HPR reusable air filter can be serviced when dirty, using part number 884820, and used again. The Spectre 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014, and 2015 Toyota FJ Cruiser 4.0L air intake system uses a shiny high quality polished aluminum intake tube as well as an air filter heat shield, finished in a textured black powder coat, to help reduce the amount of hot air entering the air filter.

The Spectre Performance Toyota FJ Cruiser 4.0L air intake includes all necessary components and can be installed using basic hand tools. Spectre Performance air intake 9002 is a true bolt on performance upgrade offering more power for less money than other FJ Cruiser air intakes on the market. Clarence of Bare Speed Brought Spectre Equipped Chevy LS3 Powered 71 240Z to SEMA

Clarence of Bare Speed used a 2008 Chevrolet Corvette based LS3 V8 engine

Clarence of Bare Speed used a 2008 Chevrolet Corvette based LS3 V8 engine for his 1971 Datsun 240Z engine swap

Clarence Chan, who runs Bare Speed in Santa Clara, California, specializes in classic car restoration and race car fabrication. The 1971 Datsun 240Z he brought to the 2014 Specialty Equipment Market Association (SEMA) Show in Las Vegas, Nevada blurs the lines between car restoration and race car prep. In 1970 when the Nissan Motor Company introduced the Datsun 240Z the relatively low price, performance, and growing Datsun dealer network helped the “Z” take a chunk of market share away from other foreign sports cars of the time. The Datsun 240Z helped break the era’s stereotype of Japanese imports as simply being econobox cars.

Early Scarab conversions were the inspiration for this 1971 Datsun 240Z

Early Scarab conversions were the inspiration for this 1971 Datsun 240Z on display in the Traklite Wheels booth during the 2014 SEMA show

A stock Series 1 Datsun 240Z was equipped with a 2.4-liter inline six-cylinder engine rated at around 150 horsepower. The engine used an alloy head, overhead camshaft, and had a 7,000 RPM redline. While this makes for a fun to drive car, it wasn’t long before racers and custom car builders figured out how boost power output of a Japanese sports car in true American fashion. As the old saying goes, there’s no replacement for displacement. A now defunct company named Scarab made the first popular V8 conversion kits for the Datsun Z and the term ‘Scarab’ has come to describe later Datsun Z conversions.

Clarence used the early Scarab conversions as inspiration for the 1971 Datsun 240Z on display in the Traklite Wheels booth during the 2014 SEMA show. However, since the days of Scarab’s Datsun Z conversions to a V8 engine, many advances in engine design and tuning have made the engine swap less of a headache. Early Chevy small block engine swaps had interference problems with the distributor located at the back of the engine block. This problem has been overcome with modern coil-near-plug ignition and computer controlled ignition timing that completely replaces the traditional distributor. The additional weight of a V8 engine was always a problem when stuffing a V8 into a Z car. Modern aluminum engine blocks and heads have alleviated this issue, but not completely cured it. Fuel injection and throttle bodies have helped ease hood clearance issues associated with carburetors and air cleaners.

Spectre 4 inch O.D. Y pipe formed the basis of this Chevy LS engine swap intake

Spectre Performance 4 inch O.D. Y pipe 97997 formed the basis of this Chevy LS engine swap cold air intake system

Modern advances in engine technology are exactly why Clarence chose to use a Chevrolet LS3 V8 engine for his Datsun 240Z engine swap. The 6.2L LS3 V8 engine was first used in the base model 2008 Chevy C6 Corvette. The 2008 Chevy Corvette’s 6.2L LS3 V8 was rated at 430 horsepower and 424 lb-ft of torque from the factory. With the use of a manual throttle body and engine tuning, Clarence has brought the 1971 Datsun Z’s LS3 V8 up over the 500 horsepower mark. However, one obstacle that exists for anyone trying to swap a Chevy LS V8 into a classic car is how to provide the engine with as much clean air as the engine can use.

Spectre Components allowed this LS3 powered 1971 Datsun 240Z to use a custom ram air induction system

Spectre Components allowed this LS3 powered 1971 Datsun 240Z to use a custom ram air induction system without spoiling the original Z car lines

Spectre Performance offers a line of Chevy LS Engine Swap air intake kits and custom air intake components to make engine swap projects a little bit easier. Pre-configured Spectre Performance LS engine swap cold air intake systems are available for popular classic Chevrolet cars and pickup trucks. So for an application like the Bare Speed 1971 Datsun 240Z, a full custom air intake system would need to be designed using Spectre Performance universal air intake parts. Clarence chose to begin his custom LS swap cold air intake system with a Spectre Performance 4 inch O.D. "Y" pipe, number 97997, connected to the throttle body with Spectre flex coupler 9775. Cleverly hidden inside the 6” legs of Y pipe 97997, are two Spectre Performance HPR0100 inline air filters. These filters are designed to fit inside of 4” air intake tubes for ample airflow and engine protection while keeping things looking simple. Due to clearance issues around the radiator Clarence adapted his intake system to 3-1/2” diameter 90-degree tubes, 9599, with the use of Spectre reducer couplers, number 97411. The unused space on each side of the radiator made an excellent place to mount Spectre Performance headlight funnels, number 9789, and Spectre headlight funnel screens, number 97891. With the use of additional Spectre components, such as hose clamps and a mass airflow (MAF) conversion kit 7153, Clarence was able to outfit his LS3 powered 1971 Datsun 240Z with a custom ram air induction system without spoiling the original Z car lines.

Additional aftermarket parts used in the Bare Speed 1971 Datsun 240Z Scarab inspired conversion include shorty headers by Sanderson Headers mated to custom exhaust from Magnaflow. The Datsun’s suspension was beefed up with custom QA1 coilover shocks, and Energy Suspension bushings. A fifth gen 2013 Chevy Camaro rearend equipped with an Auburn Gear limited slip differential plants the 6.2L LS3 V8 engine’s massive horsepower and torque to the pavement. The Bare Speed 1971 Datsun 240Z rolls on Traklite Wheels wrapped in Toyo Tires. Inside, Recaro Seats replace the worn out stockers and interior components come from Black Dragon Automotive.

Spectre Performance synthetic air filter number HPR3914

If you’re going to replace a stock disposable air filter it makes sense to upgrade to something better, which is why Spectre Performance designed synthetic air filter number HPR3914
