OPTIMA's Last Chance Qualifier - Who Will Make the Cut and Who Will Get Cut?

Photo of Driver's Meeting in Paddock area at Autoclub Speedway, Fontana

Autoclub Speedway in Fontana once again played host the OPTIMA’s Search for the Ultimate Street Car

The Autoclub Speedway, in Fontana, California, played host to the final qualifier event of the season, OPTIMA’s 2016 Search for the Ultimate Street Car held on October 8th and 9th. With five invitations on the line for the season finale, OPTIMA's Ultimate Street Car Invitational (OUSCI), the tension was so thick you could cut it with a knife! Those finals invites for OPTIMA'S Ultimate Street Car Invitational, were handed out at the close of the event on Sunday. Needless to say, with over 90 registered participants, we saw some extraordinary driving and a lot of drivers with their game faces on!

Over the course of this past season with 9 qualifying events already in the books leading up to the final event, forty-five invites have been awarded to the top drivers, including those participants who received the Spectre Performance Spirit of the Event Award. Add in the final five from this event and that leaves 15 invitations for the drivers at the top of the points list, pulling points from their best three events during the 2016 season. Mind you these invites are not class specific like the qualifier events have been so we could wind up with more participants from the GTL Class than GTV. It was anyone’s guess!

People like John McKissack, recipient of the Spectre Spirit of the Event Award, embody our goals

As we've watched the last few events unfold, we've witnessed a lot of upheaval in the standings and expected even more at Fontana. This final qualifying event was also the third event many West Coast competitors would run, which meant several of the drivers saw significant jumps in the standings. At the same time, that movement meant several other competitors could fall significantly in the standings.

At this final qualifier event, two of our Spectre Performance Team Driver’s competed for a chance at the invite for OUSCI. Seasoned veteran racer, Mary Pozzi and 2015 OUSCI Golden Ticket recipient, Greg Thurmond were in attendance. Both driver’s were entered in the GTV Class where they were up against almost forty other class participants. Pozzi and Thurmond are capable, competitive drivers who always excel in autocross and speed stop challenge so Saturday proved to be a real confidence builder for the two. Pozzi and Thurmond killed it in speed stop. However, Thurmond lost gears 2-5 during his speed stop segment leaving him only first gear to compete in autocross. Fortunately Thurmond didn't suffer too much with only first gear in the autocross. The course was technical with some high speed straights but overall Thurmond's gearing worked to afford him some pretty decent lap times.

Spectre Performance Team Driver Greg Thurmond has worked hard all season long and is going to Vegas

On Sunday, the participants ran the Autoclub Speedway infield road course. Both Spectre drivers competed in the Intermediate Run Group for the Falken Tire Hot Lap Challenge. Neither had run this infield course and had to rely on common sense and talent to lay down their most impressive lap times on the unfamiliar road course. It wasn't certain if we'd see Greg Thurmond Sunday morning after his transmission issues but with this having been the final qualifier he and SCAR were at the track, raring to go. Thurmond spent Saturday evening after having successfully completed the Road Rally, in first gear, with James Crosby of Ridetech. The pair pulled and switched out the transmission having everything sorted so he could be competitive come Sunday on the road course. Thurmond had yet to win his class but stood to make it to the invitational based on accumulated points. This was Pozzi’s first OPTIMA event of the season and in typical Mary Pozzi style her solid on track performance did indeed garner her the invite. However in a swift turn of events she declined the invitation stating that she wanted to allow for someone new to get a chance to attend the "big dance!" Friend and fellow competitor Nick Relampagos was next in line and this will be his first invite to the OPTIMA series grand finale.

Another Spectre Performance brand ambassador, Efrain Diaz, was a likely candidate going into the event based on points. You may recall his success in the Super Chevy Muscle Car Challenge that took place at the Autoclub Speedway just a few short weeks ago. This privateer gave the best of the best a hard run for their money in his 1969 “home built” Camaro RS coming in fourth place behind some heavy hitters in the racing world. In fact, he added a little aero to his ride and it appears to have worked out in his favor securing him an invite to Vegas as well.

There was destined to be a few upsets with so many participants hoping to have made the cut. It’s safe to say that this season has seen some of the best competition the series has ever had. In fact, a number of the drivers have competed in multiple vehicles in multiple classes to see where there could potentially stack up.

Privateer and brand loyalist, Efrain Diaz, proved to be the dark horse in this final qualifier event

If the incredible competition wasn’t enough for the drivers, after a couple weeks of seemingly milder weather, the weather channel had called for triple digit heat out on the track and that too played a role in the end result. The hotter weather would wreak havoc on vehicles when they were pushed to the limit. We saw some on track slip and slides, a little fender bender, and a few transmission issues on track. All in all it was a very successful season for all involved and Spectre Performance was thrilled to have been part of another exciting year of competition.

Congratulations to all of the winners and invitees and we look forward to seeing you all at SEMA and OUSCI 2016.

Spectre Cures Boring Engine Bays in 2015-2016 Mustangs With Dress Up Covers

Spectre caps covers in stalled on 5.0L Coyote engine of Ford Mustang

The 2015-2016 Mustang GT engine is perfectly offset by a touch of chrome from Spectre

Engines today are just insane. Back in the 1970s when fuel economy and emissions controls first came into force, no one thought they’d ever see cars as powerful as the muscle cars of the 1960s ever again. Right now, the base engine in the Ford Mustang is a 3.7 L V-6 that produces 300 horsepower (SAE net). In 1970, the 302 Mustang was rated at 290 horsepower (SAE gross), with an estimated SAE net horsepower, for comparison’s sake, of 240 horsepower.

And when you go to the other end of the spectrum, the goal line moves even further away. Take the 2017 Shelby GT350. With its 529 net horsepower, it easily tops the legendary 425 Gross horsepower 427 V-8 as installed in the Shelby Cobra starting in 1965, despite having 122ci less displacement.

But with all of this performance and the hardware required to achieve it, something has been lost. Open the hood of a 1960s Muscle Car and you’ll likely see a chrome air cleaner cover, painted engine, zinc chromate carburetor, colored plug wires, maybe tubular headers, and countless other interesting bits that make your eyes dart around like watching a pinball machine. Today, crack the hood of a modern muscle car and you’ll be greeted by a sea of black and grey plastic. Thankfully Spectre has the cure for the 2015 – 2016 Ford Mustang under hood blues.

The answer is a series of caps and covers, available in a range of finishes, that add luster and sparkle when you lift the hood at the next cruise night or wherever you like to show off your car.

Covers snap onto the existing caps so there's never any issue with vehicle warranty

Spectre kit 42929 includes 4 chrome covers: brake fluid, overflow, oil filler and windshield washer

These caps and covers are designed to fit directly to the OEM component which eliminates any concern over an aftermarket replacement cap or cover stripping, failing, or leaking. The reason is that Spectre components utilize the factory caps as their base, so you can be assured that there’ll be no interference with any mechanical functionality or create any issues with your new vehicle factory warranty. And Spectre dress-up covers are available in a very cool modern design and in three colors: bronze, chrome, or silver.

Parts available today from Spectre include the following (all part numbers are for the modern design chrome finish): cap cover kit, which includes covers for the brake fluid cap, overflow cap, oil filler cap, and windshield washer cap. All with a carbon fiber look inset. There’s also a dipstick cover that’s an easy-to-install two-piece design that snaps into place over the OE dipstick. In addition to the cap covers, Spectre also offers an air box cover, a fuse box cover, and a brake reservoir cover that dresses up your stock brake reservoir which is quick and easy to install with its secure adhesive backing.

These components are designed and tested on numerous different Mustangs to assure they fit all the models listed. In addition, each part is heat tested both in the lab and on the road to make sure they can withstand the brutal underhood environment, and rigorous finish testing is conducted to assure the shine lasts through everyday driving and normal cleaning with approved products.

Modern design with a durable ABS construction and featuring a carbon fiber appearance

The air box cover alone adds a great deal of visual interest under the hood of a 2015-2016 Mustang

And even though these upgrades make a big impact when you pop the hood, they make only a small impact on your wallet. Over half of the all the products in the line have a suggested retail price of $14.99 or less, and the most expensive part is only $49.99. It’s pretty unlikely that you’d be able to add that level of under hood interest for that kind of budget.

But wait, we haven’t forgot Chevy and Mopar fans. Check out the Spectre site for dress-up covers for Chevrolet Camaros and for Dodge Challenger, Charger and Chrysler 300 models.

These cap covers are designed to fit the following models:

2016 FORD MUSTANG GT 5.0L V8 Fuel Injection - All Models
2016 FORD MUSTANG 3.7L V6 Fuel Injection - All Models
2015 FORD MUSTANG GT 5.0L V8 Fuel Injection - All Models

The Spectre 9044 air intake includes a washable and reusable Spectre HPR 9606 air filter

First introduced in 2008 in South Korea under the name Darwoo Lacetti Premiere, the Chevrolet Cruze is a compact car that includes a 4-door sedan, 5-door hatchback, and a station wagon and has been on sale in Australasia since 2009 as the Holden Cruze. It replaced the Chevrolet Cobalt and Daewoo Lacenti. GM Daewoo of South Korea and General Motors' German-based Opel division were involved in the design and engineering.

It features four-wheel drive as standard and all-wheel drive as an option. Eleven engines are available to power the vehicle including two 1.4-liter I4s, two 1.6-liter I4s, three 1.8-liter I4 gasoline engines and a 1.7-liter I4 diesel and three 2.0-liter I4 diesel engines. Six transmissions are available - 5-speed manual, 6-speed M32 manual, 6-speed F40 manual, 6-speed GM6T30 automatic, 6-speed GM 6T40 automatic and 6-speed Aisin-Warner AF40-6 automatic.

The body construction is 65 percent high-strength steel and it includes MacPherson struts in the front suspension and a solid torsion beam axle in the rear. Hydraulically assisted rack and pinion (electric for North America) steering permits a turning radius of 36 feet (10.9-meters). There are ventilated brakes in front and solid rear disc brakes in the rear. A four-point engine mount is included to counteract noise, vibration and harshness. Sound damping material in areas including the dashboard panel, luggage compartment, decklid, internals, doors, carpet, and headlining as well as triple-layer sealing in the doors also contribute to muting noise.

The Australasian New Car Assessment Program (ANCAP) awarded the car five full stars in its independent crash test. China New Car Assessment Program (C-NCAP) gave it a maximum five-star rating. Euro NCAP rated it the full five-star grade. It also received the highest possible safety rating of “good” by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety for front, side, rear and rollover crash protection tests. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration awarded it its highest five-star rating for safety.

The Spectre 9044 Air Intake includes a polished aluminum tube and black powder-coated heat shield

The Spectre 9044 air intake kit includes three stainless steel clamps, boots, and hardware.

The car went through an updating in 2012 and 2014. The front fascia was redesigned with the air vents, the fog lamps, the grille and headlights were re-worked, and General Motors started offering the MyLink entertainment system as an option in 2012. The grille was updated again and the car was given a more angular shape in 2014.

The second-generation Cruze was introduced in 2016. Body styles include a 4-door sedan and 5-door hatchback. A new 1.4-liter I4 gasoline engine was introduced, which mates to a 6-speed M32 manual or a 6-speed GM 6T35 automatic.

Spectre is offering the Spectre 9044 air intake kit for the 2011 through 2015 Chevrolet Cruze. The kit is designed to offer an increase of horsepower and torque and protects the engine from harmful contaminants. The air intake kit includes a red Spectre washable and reusable air filter that features a non-woven synthetic media that helps produce higher airflow with less restriction. Also featured is a polished aluminum tube and black powdercoated heat shield that is meant to prevent hot engine air from entering the intake inlet.

Spectre also offers the Accucharge precision air filter cleaning and oiling system that is specially formulated to recharge a Spectre air filter. So if you properly treat the air filter with the every time the filter needs cleaning it can be reused over and over again. Spectre recommends that you inspect the filter during regularly scheduled maintenance or every 7,000 miles.

Spectre Performance Team Driver, Lynda Jacobs Was Born with a Shifter in Hand!

Spectre Performance Team Driver, Lynda Jacobs with her 1966 Chevelle, Wimpy

The history of automobiles and motorcycles being used for drag racing is nearly as long as the history of motorized vehicles themselves and has taken the form of both illegal street racing and as an organized and regulated motorsport. Many of the earliest events were effectively reliability trials, aimed at proving these new machines were a practical mode of transport. Spectre Performance Team Driver Lynda Jacobs was quite literally born into the automotive industry. Her father, Joe Turek, left his mark on her in regards to racing. Joe had a speed shop in the 1950s and 1960s where he serviced high performance vehicles and built chassis for drag cars including his own nitro injected dragster. He was also the president of the United Drag Racers Association, or UDRA, at one time and one of the founding people involved with the Midwest’s World Series of Drag Racing.

The American muscle car was designed for straight-line speed, and did not have the sophisticated chassis and engineering integrity of European high-performance cars. That is until the concept of the pro-touring car was born; a style of classic muscle car with upgraded suspension components, brake system, drivetrain, and aesthetics, that may include many of the amenities of a new performance car.

Although around several types of motorsports with her family for most of her life, Lynda never really did any performance driving of her own until 2007. She visited the SCCA booth that winter, at the Chicago Auto Show, with her husband, and signed up for their April autocross “Learning Curve” driving school. At the time they had a 2001 Convertible Corvette. After that class both she and Chris, who borrowed Lynda’s mom’s C6, started hitting every autocross that their local SCCA region had that year, as well as autocrossing for the first time at Goodguys that fall.

When the sun is out, the top is down, even at the race track!

Lynda purchased her Chevelle, Wimpy, back in 2001 and it was pretty much all stock. Her Lemonwood Yellow 1966 SS 396 convertible was complete with its California black license plate. Sold new in LA, this car had its 360 HP big block, Powerglide automatic, and drum brakes. When she got the Chevelle she had no idea what they would end up doing with it. Mods started with her and her hubby's sights on the Hot Rod Power Tour. A 700R4 trans was installed along with an AGR steering box, 17”/18” American Racing wheels, 4 wheel disc brakes, and a 496 engine. This basic combo remained for many years along with the addition of a complete Global West suspension kit. This is how the car was autocrossed at Goodguys in 2007. In fact some of these items are still on the car today.

View of Lynda Jacobs on the autocross course in her '66 Chevelle, Wimpy

Once the pro-touring events really started to grow it became obvious that she would need to step things up a little. New Wilwood brakes were added along with the replacement of the factory drum brake spindles. New CNC machined aluminum units went in place with adjustable upper A-arms. The Chevelle rides on a complete set of Viking double adjustable coilovers with DSE front and rear sway bars. In 2013, Randy Johnson at D&Z Customs helped with the installation of a cammed LS3 with FAST EZ EFI 2.0 from Dan at Finish Line Performance. Backed by a new 4L60 trans with TCI controller from Chuck Johnson at Finish Line Transmissions, and the original 12 bolt upgraded with Strange axles and big Ford housing ends by Dave at Competition Fabrication. Competition Fabrication also built the custom bolt in chromoly roll bar which ties right into the convertible boxed frame. Interior upgrades also include Cerullo seats, Crow belts, Ididit column, PCS paddle shifter, Nardi wheel, and Dakota Digital VHX dash. New Weld 18” wheels with 275 Rival S tires all of the way around complete how the car is now. When is comes to Lynda's Chevelle, Wimpy, she and her husband take care of the regular maintenance and getting the car "race and show" ready. She credits the major work being done by her friends over at Finish Line Performance, who have handled all of the upgrades and mods for the past 15 years. Definitely a “team” effort.

Throughout her career as a performance driver, Lynda and Wimpy have successfully competed at Cars and Cones, the Midwest Musclecar Challenge, the Motor State Challenge, North East Muscle Car Challenge, Goodguys Des Moines, Goodguys Columbus, the Chicago Region SCCA autocross series, USCA/OSUSC Road America and OUSCI. She won the 2016 Goodguys Spring Lone Star National Hot Rod Autocross class driving a 1954 Chevy, plus finished in the runner up position at the Chicago region SCCA in CAM-T class in both 2014 and 2016.

The driving duo of husband/wife team, Chris and Lynda Jacobs, first became Spectre Performance brand ambassadors back in 2015. Lynda told us that for a couple of regular working stiffs from the Midwest, "It's an honor to be recognized enough to be involved with these incredible companies. We have been blessed to get help over the years from not only nationally recognized brands like Spectre Performance, but also the Roadster Shop, BFGoodrich, Wilwood, D&Z Customs, Finish Line Performance, CMP (Custom Machine Performance), the list goes on and on." Visibly humbled and delighted she notes that without their support she would not have the opportunities that she does. "It is really cool to see that these companies recognize the value in the opportunities we can provide. The events we attend allow spectators a lot more accessibility than say, a NASCAR race. We can all mingle with the crowds and in some cases, like Goodguys, give people rides and introduce them to what we do. Very difficult to do with just about any other form of motorsports", said Lynda.

So what does the 2017 race season hold for Spectre Performance Team Driver Lynda Jacobs? She has been involved with helping out at the Chicago Region SCCA autocross schools, and most recently assisted and instructed at her last Tire Rack Street Survival School and hopes to continue being involved with programs of this type. She recognizes how track awareness can positively affect a drivers performance and ability in their daily driver. Lynda is inspired by other women in the automotive and racing industry, most notably Stacy Tucker for her business and accomplishments as well as fast Mary Pozzi. Both have made her feel that being a lady in competitive motorsports is not only acceptable, but encouraged, and you do not have to be a guy to winner.
